Bullmastiffs are powerful, protective, and surprisingly gentle giants who love snuggles. They’re known for their loyal nature and calm confidence and are devoted family companions and natural guardians. Due to their large size and breed-specific health risks, pet insurance for Bullmastiff dogs is one way to help protect your pup over its lifetime.

The Bullmastiff was developed in 19th-century England by gamekeepers who needed a fearless dog to stop poachers without causing harm. By crossing the English Mastiff with the Bulldog, they created a dog that was fast, strong, and silent when working.
Over time, Bullmastiffs earned a reputation for bravery and their affectionate, even-tempered nature, making them a favourite in family homes today.
Our dog insurance plans offer coverage for up to 90%* of eligible vet bills, a 21-day cooling-off period, friendly customer service, and the added perk of 2 months free on any new pet insurance plans.
Despite their imposing presence, Bullmastiffs are big, goofy softies at heart. They’re calm and loyal and form strong bonds with their families, often thinking they’re lap dogs! If you’ve ever met one, you’ll know the joy of a giant snuggle from a dog who thinks they’re half their weight. And be prepared for big, slobbery kisses, as this breed tends to drool (a lot!).
Bullmastiffs are naturally protective but rarely aggressive, making them great family companions when properly trained (the earlier, the better). Because of their build and health profile, the right pet insurance for Bullmastiffs should include cover for joint issues, heart conditions, and other breed-specific concerns.

This is a serious, life-threatening condition where your dog’s stomach twists and fills with gas. You’ll need emergency vet care for treatment.
Cardiomyopathy is a disease that weakens your dog’s heart muscles, leading to fatigue, breathing issues and potential heart failure.
Although selective breeding can help eliminate this condition, larger dogs are prone to Hip Dysplasia, where the thigh bone doesn’t fit correctly into the hip socket. This condition can lead to arthritis and mobility issues.
Larger, active dogs like the Bullmastiff are prone to developing elbow joint abnormalities, which cause pain, stiffness and lameness. Weight management and vet care can help ease the effects of Elbow Dysplasia.
Aortic Stenosis is a heart condition where your dog’s blood flow is restricted due to a narrowed aortic valve. This is often diagnosed in young dogs during a routine vet checkup.
Big, brave and full of love, your Bullmastiff is more than just a watchdog. They’re a loyal companion who’ll do anything for their family. With their size and a few breed-specific health risks, pet insurance for Bullmastiff dogs can help you confidently handle the unexpected veterinary bills that may pop up over their lifetime.
At Pet Insurance Australia, we offer flexible options, fast claims, and real support when needed. Whether it’s a sudden injury, ongoing care, or routine checkups, we’re here to help you care for your gentle giant.
