When your pet is suddenly unwell or has an accident, everything moves fast. Tests. Treatment options. Big decision. Accidental Injury and illness pet insurance is designed to help cover eligible costs for both unexpected injuries as a result of an accident and serious diseases, to help when weighing up care against your savings. With annual benefit limits of$15,000, $25,000 or $35,000, you can focus on getting your pet the care they deserve, knowing you’ve done everything you can to help cover your furry family member.
If your pet has had a health hiccup before, it’s completely normal to wonder where that leaves you. A past ear infection. A stomach upset. A lump that turned out to be nothing serious (thankfully). It’s often in those moments that owners start thinking about pet insurance or worrying if they’ll ever qualify for cover again.**
When it comes to pet insurance for pre-existing illness, the definition is important. A pre-existing condition is any illness or injury that first showed signs or symptoms before your policy began, or during a waiting period, even if there wasn’t a formal diagnosis at the time.
There’s also a difference between chronic and temporary conditions.
Chronic conditions, like Diabetes or Hip Dysplasia, are lifelong and remain excluded if they were pre-existing.
Temporary conditions are different. If your pet experienced something short-term, like a one-off bout of gastro or an ear infection, and stays symptom-free for 18 months, that condition may no longer be excluded.
Pet Insurance Australia allows you to apply for a pre-existing condition review after 18 months. So, while many people assume there is no pet insurance that covers pre-existing illness, there may be a pathway for certain temporary conditions.
Applying for cover is easy.
Through the online quote tool, you can choose Select and Protect Cover for accidents and Illness, which helps cover eligible vet expenses for surgeries, hospitalisation, specialist care, prescription medications and diagnostics related to covered illnesses.
You can also choose your reimbursement level – 70%. 80%, or 90% of eligible vet bills, depending on how you’d like to balance your premium with your level of protection. That flexibility helps you to build a cover that fits your household budget without compromising on serious health cover for your pet.
Emergency vet treatment can be expensive, and it usually happens when you least expect it. One minute, your dog has swallowed something odd or your cat is not acting like themselves, and the next, you’re being walked through estimates that can range in the thousands depending on what is needed.
Without cover, that bill lands entirely on you. With pet insurance for accident and illness, you can choose manageable monthly payments, and if your vet is signed up to GapOnly®, you can simply claim on the spot and only pay the ‘gap’ 11, which may include excess.
And because there are no sub-limits – with the exclusion of Booster Care13 and non-insurance benefit of Routine Care7, your full annual limit is there for the big moments, not broken up into smaller limits.
For some pet parents, emergency cover is enough. For others, it never quite feels complete. Maybe you have dealt with pet dental issues before or rehab services such as hydrotherapy. Pet owners know recovery may not always stop at surgery. Sometimes it’s the follow-up treatments, the rehab sessions, the slow return to normal that add up.
That’s where the Booster Care13 add-on could make sense. With a $2,500 annual limit, it includes additional benefits such as dental and specialised rehab therapies (like physio or hydrotherapy) for pets who may need that extra level of support.
Then there’s also the non-insurance benefits of Routine Care7. The everyday stuff. Vaccinations, health checks, parasite protection. The things you know are needed every year but often forget to budget for. You can add these to your pet insurance illness cover for up to a $200 contribtion, or keep your plan simple. It’s about building cover that reflects how you care for your pet in real life, not just ticking a box.
There are also a few practical details that make a real difference once you’re sitting in a veterinarians consult room.
Eligible treatments under the Accidental Injury & Illness plan don’t have sub-limits. That means your annual benefit is not chopped into tiny categories. If your pet needs more scans than expected, or ongoing medication, you can claim up to your full benefit limit. You’re also free to visit any licensed vet in Australia. No restricted networks. No second-guessing whether your usual clinic is approved.
If advanced diagnostics like MRI or CT scans are required, or prescription medications are part of the eligible treatment plan, those sit within the core benefit.
And your pet will be Covered for Life, for eligible conditions claimed during the policy year, as long as your policy stays active. So, if something becomes ongoing, you’re not starting from scratch each year.
Timing really does matter. For example, accidental injuries have a 2-day waiting period, illnesses have a 30-day waiting period, and cruciate ligament and dental conditions have a 6-month waiting period.
Because pre-existing conditions, including those that arise during waiting periods, are excluded, it’s good to consider accident and illness dog insurance before your pet shows any sign of illness.
Once symptoms appear, your options can start to narrow. Early enrolment gives you the best chance of ensuring that if a chronic condition develops later in life, it may be eligible for cover under your policy.
When something feels off with your pet, you want to help them get the care they need. Pet Insurance Australia is built to support you in those moments.
With GapOnly®11 technology, participating vets can process claims on the spot, so you only pay the remaining gap, not the full invoice upfront. Add to that MyPetPass5, which gives you 24/7 access to video vet consults, so you can speak to a qualified professional whenever you need reassurance or guidance.
If you’re considering pet insurance for accident and illness, Pet Insurance Australia’s Select & Protect plan could be worth investigating. You can get a quote in a matter of minutes and put appropriate cover in place. Because when it comes to your pet’s health, being prepared is one of the greatest gifts you can give them.
