Our cat and dog policy options are designed to provide protection throughout your pet’s life. Depending on the plan chosen, benefits can include eligible vet bills for microchipping or vaccinations right through to cancer treatments such as lymphoma or squamous cell carcinoma.

PIA offers a variety of cat and dog policy options, from basic coverage to comprehensive protection for specified accident, illness, and routine care*.
Once you have selected the policy that best suits your cat or dog, you can submit your application online and pay the premium using our secure payment system. We have different payment options including fortnightly, monthly, or yearly.
If your application for pet insurance is approved, you will receive your policy documentation with details of your dog or cat insurance plan. Cover will start from midnight on the day of application. Pet Essentials – Specified Accidental Injury and Illness Cover (subject to an annual condition limit).
Comprehensive Cover – specified Accidental Injury and Illness Cover^.
Major Medical Cover – Specified Accidental Injury, Illness and Routine Care Cover (non-insurance benefit).
The Waiting Periods that apply are:
30 days – for Conditions covered under the Illness Cover.
6 months – for Cruciate Ligament Conditions (may be waived on application, refer to the Product Disclosure Statement for more information.
Specified accidental injuries are covered from 11:59pm from the commencement date of the first policy period.
As with most insurance products, there are certain situations where you will not be covered.
There are some general exclusions such as Pre-existing Conditions, dental procedures and fractured teeth, routine or preventative Treatments (unless Routine Care (non-insurance benefit)is purchased, which provides benefits up to the Routine Care limits), some Elective Treatments and procedures and breeding or obstetrics.
There may also be specific exclusions which may apply to specific levels of Cover. It is important that you read all of your policy documentation for full details.
You can apply for Pet Essentials cover as long as your pet is over 8 weeks of age and younger than 12 years. For Comprehensive and Major Medical cover, pets need to be over 8 weeks of age and younger than 9 years when you apply.
Yes. We cover for hereditary and congenital conditions as long as there are no signs or symptoms of that condition prior to the commencement of your policy or within the applicable waiting period.
Like all insurance, anything that existed, or you or your vet were aware of prior to your policy or during the applicable waiting period is generally excluded from cover.
Insurance policies are there to protect against the unexpected so for this reason, claims relating to pre-existing conditions are not covered. This helps keep coverage fair for all of our customers.
However, we know that some conditions can genuinely be resolved or cured. So, for that reason, pre-existing conditions are assessed differently depending on whether they are chronic conditions or temporary conditions for your pet.

Yes, you can use any vet who is licensed to practice in Australia other than yourself.
For adopted Pets, if you can provide us with proof of adoption or transfer of ownership papers we will only request veterinary history from the date you took ownership onwards.
