Practically a pop icon, the Dachshund (or Sausage Dog) is beloved the world over. Their popularity is not surprising, considering their adorable long bodies and soulful eyes. With an independent streak and a strong protective nature, these pups are fiercely loyal to their humans and will gladly play guardian—even if they are a bit closer to the ground than your average watchdog.
The Dachshund, often affectionately referred to as the “Sausage Dog” or “Dachys” is a small but brave breed with a distinctive elongated body and short legs.
Originally bred in Germany for hunting, Dachshunds were specifically designed to dig into burrows and chase small game like badgers and rabbits. Their bold and independent nature made them excellent hunting companions, while their unique shape allowed them to burrow into tight spaces.
Despite their hunting background, Dachshunds have become beloved family pets thanks to their affectionate personalities and distinctive appearance. Over the years, they have gained popularity as companion animals, thriving in homes with both city dwellers and families in suburban settings.
Our dog insurance plans offer coverage for up to 90%* of eligible vet bills, a 21-day cooling-off period, friendly customer service, and the added perk of 2 months free on any new pet insurance plans.
Dachshunds are known for their playful, courageous, and loyal personalities. Despite their small size, they have a strong and confident temperament, often believing they are much larger than they actually are.
This boldness makes them excellent watchdogs, as they are always alert and ready to protect their family.
Dachshunds are also very affectionate and enjoy being close to their owners, often forming strong bonds with family members. They are generally friendly but can sometimes be reserved around strangers.
These dogs are intelligent and independent, which can make training a bit of a challenge, but with consistency, they can learn commands quickly.
While their short coat doesn’t require extensive grooming, long-haired varieties may need more regular care.
Dachshunds also love exercise, though due to their long backs, they should be given low-impact activities to avoid putting stress on their spine.
Overall, they are energetic, curious, and make delightful companions for families with a lot of love to give.
