Poodles are regarded as one of the most intelligent dog breeds. They are quick learners, making them very easy to train. Due to this reason, they perform well in dog sports and dog shows as they excel in agility and obedience type tasks. They also make great family pets as they are well-behaved, affectionate, loyal and family-friendly.
Another reason for their popularity is their hypoallergenic, low-shedding coat. As well as being ideal for people with allergies, their curly, dense coat also means that furniture stays hair free compared to other breeds that shed a lot.

Poodles are regarded as one of the most intelligent dog breeds, quick to pick up new commands and more than capable of learning complex tasks. They respond best to positive reinforcement and short, fun training sessions that keep them engaged, and their problem-solving ability means they need mental stimulation as much as physical work. Obedience classes are a good starting point, and many Poodles go on to advanced training, agility or work as service and therapy dogs. Keep commands and routines consistent, and socialise them properly from an early age.
A Poodle’s coat is hair rather than fur, so it grows continuously and sheds very little, which makes the breed a good fit for allergy sufferers but means grooming is never optional. Brush daily to prevent matting, book a professional groom every four to six weeks, bathe every three to four weeks with a gentle dog shampoo, and trim nails every three to four weeks, with ears cleaned and teeth brushed weekly. Exercise needs depend on the size: standard Poodles need at least 60 minutes a day, miniatures 30 to 45, and toys 20 to 30. Mix it up with walks, games, swimming and agility work, and make room for social play with other dogs.
Poodles are better suited to indoor living, being sensitive to the cold and happiest in a climate-controlled home, but they adapt readily to apartments or houses with gardens and to a wide range of lifestyles. They make excellent family pets for active households with children, and they suit singles and seniors just as well, getting on with other pets when properly socialised. What they cannot do is spend long stretches alone, as the breed is people-focused and prone to separation anxiety. When choosing your Poodle, let the size guide you: standards are 20 to 32kg and need a solid hour of exercise a day, miniatures 4.5 to 7kg, and toys just 1.8 to 2.7kg, with a lifespan of 12 to 15 years across the breed and up to 18 for toys.
