Bichon Frise dogs are cheerful little charmers with clouds of white fluff and a knack for winning hearts. Friendly, playful, and full of personality, they’re the kind of dog that makes strangers smile on the street. Similarly to every other dog breed, the Bichon Frise is prone to a few health issues. With their delicate frame and a few genetic quirks to watch, many pet parents explore pet insurance for their Bichon Frise early on to help manage future vet visits.

The Bichon Frise may look like a lap dog bred for luxury, but this little breed has a globe-trotting past. Originating in the Mediterranean, they were favoured by sailors before winning over the nobility of France, Italy and Spain. With their merry disposition and powder-puff looks, they quickly became the darlings of royal courts as far back as the 13th century. Today, they still delight households across Australia with their happy-go-lucky attitude and teddy bear appearance.
Our dog insurance plans offer coverage for up to 90%* of eligible vet bills, a 21-day cooling-off period, friendly customer service, and the added perk of 2 months free on any new pet insurance plans.
Don’t let the toy-dog look fool you—the Bichon is a lively little legend! They’re social, smart and always up for fun, whether a walk around the block or a game of fetch in the lounge. They thrive in homes where they’re included in the action and love being around people (and sometimes other pets). But keeping them looking like fluffy marshmallows takes commitment. This breed has high grooming needs, which include regular brushing and pro trims to prevent coat matting.

This hormonal disorder causes the adrenal glands to produce too much cortisol, which can lead to increased thirst, hair loss, and a pot-bellied appearance. Managing it often involves ongoing medication and monitoring.
A condition seen in young dogs (6-9 months of age) where the blood supply to the head of the femur is restricted, causing the bone to deteriorate and the joint to collapse. Surgery is the recommended treatment.
This is a common condition in small breeds. It occurs when the kneecap slips out of place, causing limping or skipping. Mild cases may only need monitoring, while more serious cases may need surgery.
This is another hip issue sometimes seen in the Bichon Frise. The head of the femur doesn’t fit into the hip socket, causing pain, lameness, and potentially arthritis in the future.
Some Bichons are prone to irregular heart rhythms or value issues, which can be spotted during regular vet checks. These dogs may need ongoing medication and vet checks.
