Small dogs bring a wealth of love and happiness to any home. Typically defined as those who weigh less than 2.3kg to 10kg and stand under 40 centimetres in height at the shoulder. However, some small breeds might be slightly larger or smaller depending on their breed.
It’s important when choosing a small dog breed to research their history. Some small dogs make perfect lap dogs, like the Shih Tzu or Pug, and require minimal exercise while others may require a fair bit of physical activity – cue the Jack Russell Terrier, Chihuahua, or Yorkshire Terrier.
Compact breeds are also perfect companions for apartment living and smaller dwellings that might not cope with a larger dog. Smaller breeds are also easy to transport while they can also save you on the cost of food.
As with all dogs, smaller breeds will also need a good dose of training early on, and throughout their lives. Training is paramount for the safety of your small dog, and to create a loving bond with strong communication.
Your pet’s health is priceless. Don’t leave it up to chance.
