Pet Insurance Australia has been helping owners protect their German Shepherds for years, with cover for the breed-specific conditions this working breed is prone to, from hip and elbow dysplasia to bloat, pancreatitis and degenerative myelopathy.

Loyal, protective and highly intelligent, the German Shepherd is the breed trusted in police, search and rescue and assistance work — and just as devoted at home. They excel with early, consistent, positive reinforcement training, and need strong guidance and socialisation from puppyhood.
These are highly active working dogs, and lack of exercise is behind most of the behavioural problems the breed is known for. They shed all year round, so expect regular brushing, and they thrive in busy households rather than being left alone.
Over a 9 to 13 year lifespan they can be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat and pancreatitis, among others. A reputable breeder who screens for hereditary conditions lowers the odds, and the right cover takes care of the rest.

German Shepherds are highly intelligent, working-focused dogs that excel with early, consistent, positive reinforcement training, which is why they’re trusted in police, search and rescue and assistance roles. They need strong guidance and socialisation from puppyhood, and crate training is worth starting early to teach independence. Regular mental stimulation is essential — without it, problem behaviours follow — and early socialisation is what makes them safe and relaxed around children.
That medium-length double coat is weather-proof and sheds all year round, so plan on brushing two to three times a week, or more. They’re not a smelly breed, so bathe only when necessary, though ears need regular cleaning and proper drying after a swim or a bath. Exercise-wise, this is a highly active working dog needing daily physical exercise and mental stimulation. Skimp on it and you get the excessive barking, chewing and destruction the breed gets blamed for. Don’t over-exercise puppies though, as it risks bone problems — ask your breeder for guidance.
German Shepherds adapt to both indoor living and outdoor activity, provided they have weather-appropriate shelter and somewhere to cool down in the heat. They make great family pets when properly socialised and trained, thriving with active families who have the time to invest, though their size and strength mean teaching children how to interact with them properly is vital. They love being around people and don’t do well left alone for long. When choosing a puppy, go to a reputable breeder who understands hereditary conditions, ask about problems in the bloodline, view the parents where possible, and request the genetic screening paperwork.
