One of the newest cat breeds in the world is from right here in Australia. And while the Australian Mist isn’t widely distributed across the world, it’s already making waves in the UK and elsewhere. But if you’re lucky enough to live with one of these remarkable cats, you can also take advantage of the pet insurance for Australian Mist Cats from PIA. That’s just one of the many perks of living in such an incredible place.
Development of the Australian Mist began in 1976, when Truda Straede set out to develop a specialised breed that could live the whole of its life indoors. This was an important consideration in Australia, where feral cat populations were driving ecological crises and extinction.
At the same time, Straede hoped to produce a breed with a mellow personality and an affinity for the people it lived with – ensuring that it would thoroughly enjoy a life lived in relatively cramped quarters.
It’s worth noting that 30 is a large founding number, which can help to create a stronger gene pool with fewer potential faults and susceptibilities. The result is a strong and hardy cat which – when protected by pet insurance for Australian Mist Cats – is likely to live a long and healthy life.

Very short overcoat with no undercoat
Misty or marbled quality in a range of colours including peach, lilac, chocolate, caramel, blue, brown and gold
Given their short hair, limited shedding and excellent medical prognosis, the Australian Mist is exceptionally easy to care for.
The Australian Mist is average-sized and medium-boned, with large ears, round eyes and a round head. The coat is either marbled or spotted against a ticked tabby background. This creates a veiled, misty effect – thus the name of the breed. A broad nose, chin and whisker pads also make for endearing or even comical facial expressions.
Personality-wise, the Australian Mist is easy to love. They’re even tempered and seem to genuinely enjoy being around people. They’re also likely to try and get involved with your life. In particular, many owners find that their Australian Mist seems to tune in to the music they’re listening to.
