Pet Insurance Australia has been helping owners protect their Pugs for years, with cover for the breed-specific conditions this flat-faced companion is prone to, from breathing difficulties and skin fold infections to eye and joint problems.

Friendly, laidback and entirely convinced they’re the centre of attention, the Pug was bred for companionship and takes the job seriously. Smart and quick to learn, though a wee bit stubborn, so start training early.
They’re the ideal indoor dog, happiest on a lap and not one for long stretches alone. Daily walks are plenty, but that flat face makes heat a real risk, and those facial folds need wiping every few days.
Over a 12 to 15 year lifespan, Pugs can be prone to breathing difficulties, skin fold infections, and eye and joint problems. A reputable breeder lowers the odds, and the right cover takes care of the rest.

Pugs are smart, inquisitive and quick to learn, remembering what they’re taught — though some can be a wee bit stubborn, so training takes creativity, persistence and patience. Start early and agree the household rules before the puppy comes home, since bad habits are much harder to correct than to prevent. Positive reinforcement works best, though motivation varies: some Pugs will do anything for food, others would rather have the affection. Housetraining can be slow going, with crate training a help, and early socialisation through puppy preschool and group obedience classes is well worth it.
That double coat needs regular brushing, especially through moulting, to keep shedding under control and give you a chance to check the coat’s condition, with a bath about once a month. The facial folds need their own routine: wipe them with a damp cloth every few days to prevent bacteria building up, and dry them thoroughly after a bath or any water play, since damp wrinkles lead to infection. Pugs don’t need endless exercise, but they are energetic and playful, so daily walks and play sessions are important — just don’t expect much enthusiasm for fetch. Keeping them at a healthy weight matters given their love of food, and heat is a serious concern for a short-nosed breed, so limit exercise in warm weather and see your vet if they seem to be struggling.
The Pug is an ideal indoor dog, wanting close contact with its people and generally preferring to be on a lap. They thrive in busy households and make a genuinely family-friendly companion, suiting families with children provided the children are taught how to handle and play with them properly. What they don’t cope with is long periods alone, so boredom-busting activities help. When choosing a puppy, buy only from a reputable breeder, ask about hereditary problems, see the parents if you can, and contact a local breed club to check the breeder out. A good one will provide paperwork showing their breeding dogs are regularly tested for genetic disease.
