Luna & Teddy Top Australia’s Most Popular Dog Names for 2025
Pet Insurance Australia reveals national and state-by-state favourites — and the surprising trends driving them.
Australia — [November, 2025] — Pet Insurance Australia (PIA) has today released the nation’s most popular dog names for 2025, uncovering clear naming patterns across the country and strong trends driven by pop culture, nostalgia, and Australia’s growing love of “soft,” human-style pet names.
Across the nation, Luna remains the top female dog name for Australian pets, while Teddy leads as the most popular male dog name.
PIA spokesperson Nadia Crighton says these naming trends reflect the deep emotional connection Australians now share with their dogs.
“We’re seeing a real shift toward soft, comforting and very human-style names,” says Nadia Crighton from Pet Insurance Australia. “Names like Luna, Daisy, Teddy and Milo feel warm and affectionate, you could easily find them on a kindergarten roll. It shows just how loved our pets really are.”

Why These Names Are Trending
Nadia says the top names tell a very clear story about pet culture in Australia:
1. Pop Culture Influence
Names like Nala, Simba, Coco, and Archie are boosted by movies, children’s streaming shows and media personalities.
2. The Rise of “Soft Names”
“Names ending in -ie, -y or -a are exploding in popularity,” Nadia notes.
These names sound gentle, friendly and suited to family homes.
3. Humanisation of Pets
Australians are increasingly treating their dogs like children, which shows up in names like Maggie, Louis, Bonnie, and Frankie.
4. Vintage Revival
Retro names such as Winnie, Beau, Jack and Millie continue to surge.
5. Aesthetic Appeal
Short, playful names work well on Instagram and fit modern naming trends.
“Our pets are family, and their names reflect the joy, personality and love they bring into our homes,” says Nadia Crighton.
“Whether it’s a timeless classic like Charlie or a quirky favourite like Maple or Blaze, the way Australians name their dogs says so much about how deeply we value them.”
