As cats get older, things tend to change in quieter ways. They might spend more time curled up in their favourite spot, move a little slower, or become a bit fussier about food.
That’s usually when pet insurance comes up in conversation. Pet Insurance Australia’s cat insurance is designed to help support cats through different life stages, including their senior years, with flexible options to choose from.
If you’re looking into senior cat insurance, you’re likely trying to work out whether cover is still available or makes sense for your older cat.
Things like eligibility criteria, waiting periods, exclusions, and how pre-existing conditions are defined can all affect what may be covered for your old kitty. If your cat has shown signs of a condition before cover starts, or during a waiting period, that condition may not be included.
For many cat parents, pet insurance for senior cats becomes less about ‘just in case’ and more about understanding what support may be available moving forward. Taking the time to read through policy terms and compare options can help you make a more informed decision, rather than rushing into cover.
When you start comparing pet insurance for senior cats, you’ll probably notice that not every policy gives you much room to move. Some are fairly set, which can make it harder to match things to what your cat actually needs.
Pet Insurance Australia takes a different approach. Instead of choosing from fixed plans, you can adjust a few key parts of your cover so it lines up with your situation.
That includes things like:
If you’re looking into pet insurance for senior cats, that flexibility can make a difference. Especially when you’re thinking about ongoing care, not just one-off visits, and trying to choose something that feels manageable long term.
When it comes to pet insurance for senior cats, you’ve probably noticed that some options go beyond standard accident and illness cover.
Routine Care is one of those. It’s a non-insurance benefit that may help with everyday expenses like vaccinations, health checks, and preventative treatments. These are the kind of costs that tend to come up more regularly as cats get older, even when nothing serious is going on.
Booster Care is another optional extra. It may assist with specified dental conditions and specialised therapies, where eligible. Dental health, in particular, can become more of a focus in your cat’s later years.
| Option | What It Means | Your Choices | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annual benefit limit2 | This is the maximum amount you can claim for per policy period, subject to any applicable excess, for eligible accidental injuries and illnesses, as well as emergency boarding. Booster Care and Routine Care (non insurance benefit) are subject to their own limits. | $15,000; $25,000 and $35,000 | Lower for budget-conscious premiums; higher if you want more protection. |
| Benefit Percentage14 (Reimbursement) | The percentage of the eligible vet bill we will cover before the applicable annual excess is applied. Where applicable, it is also subject to the annual benefit limit or Booster Care limit. | 70%, 80%, 90% | Higher % can allow you to claim more back on your eligible vet bills. |
| Annual Excess4 | The amount you may contribute to your claim. The annual excess applies to each eligible claim in the policy period until fully paid. | $0, $100, $300, $600* *$600 annual excess not available with 70% benefit percentage | Choose a higher annual excess to help lower your premium. Just remember you may pay more out of pocket at claim time. |
| Routine care add-on7 | Optional non-insurance benefit to cover for everyday care such as vaccinations, microchipping, flea/tick | An optional benefit which you can add to your policy | Add for additional vet-cost cover. |
| Specified dental conditions add-on (Booster Care13) | Optional cover for specified dental conditions, subject to the Booster Care limit of $2500 | An optional benefit which you can add to your policy | Add for extra vet-cost protection; Great for breeds prone to dental issues. |
| Specialised therapies add-on (Booster Care13) | Optional cover for specialised therapies, subject to the Booster Care limit of $2500 | Add to your policy or skip | Add to boost vet-cost protection; skip to lower premium |
| Waiting periods | The time from your policy start date when your pet isn’t covered for certain conditions or benefits in the first year you first obtained cover for them. If a condition exists or occurs during the waiting period, it will be considered a pre-existing condition and may be excluded from cover. | Accidental injury – 2days Illness – 30days Cruciate Ligament Conditions – 6 months Specified dental conditions (Booster Care) – 6 months Behavioural conditions (Booster Care)– 30days | Starting early helps ensure your pet is covered sooner rather than later |
| Multi-pet discount12 | A percentage saving when you insure more than one pet. | Get 5% off for each additional pet you insure after the first, up to 15% max.* Example: 2nd pet: 5% | Helpful for multi-pet households. |
| Choice of vet | Use any licensed vet in Australia, other than yourself. | Included on all policies | Continue care with your preferred vet |
For many cat parents, looking into pet insurance for senior cats just happens somewhere along the way. Not because something’s gone wrong, but because they’ve noticed little changes in their cat.
Older cats usually need more regular check-ups, and those visits become part of the routine over time. It’s not always a big expense all at once, but it can add up.
Taking a bit of time to understand how cover works before anything new comes up can make things easier later on. It means you’re not trying to read through policy details or compare options while also dealing with a stressed cat during a vet’s visit.
Yes. Older cats can still be eligible for pet insurance, but there are a few more things to check first.
Age at the time you apply matters, and so does your cat’s history. At Pet Insurance Australia, you will need to have your cat covered before the age of nine to apply for a new policy. Insurers will also look at pre-existing conditions, which is whether there have already been signs of illness or injury before cover starts. That’s usually where the difference comes in between getting insurance early or waiting.
In most cases, no. If a condition, injury, or even early symptoms were present before the policy began, or during a waiting period, it’s generally treated as pre-existing and not included.
There is a distinction, though. Some temporary conditions may be reviewed if your cat has been symptom-free for a set time. Ongoing or recurring conditions are usually not covered.
More details are available on the PIA pre-existing conditions page.
Not under standard accident or illness cover. Vaccinations, general check-ups, and other preventative care are usually separate. Some owners choose to add optional (non-insurance) Routine Care, which can help with those types of expenses.
