Staffordshire Bull Terriers generally can trace their lineage to Birmingham in the UK, where the line was first developed, before further development took place in Staffordshire. From this breeding stock, progenitors went to the US and were later developed into the American Staffordshire Terrier.

Nikki LevinTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Absolutely incredible service to the absolute highest standard. Pay back is immediate, gap cover is accepted, and in general the nicest most caring humans. I could not support my precious dog without their support. Could not recommend highly enough. Jen WebsterTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My normally very healthy, happy 16th month old chihuahua suddenly became very ill and had to be rushed to the animal hospital. After lots of tests and an overnight stay plus a week of strong antibiotics, she is now back to her normal lovely self. PIA accepted all the claims and processed the payments whilst I was still at the hospital. I could not be happier with the service I received from PIA. Simone RichardsonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Only need to pay the gap, prompt claims and high proportion of costs covered- wouldn’t be without - so grateful for PIA for our golden retriever- wouldn’t be without - highly recommend! Brad DeasTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We have been insured with Pet Insurance Australia for our dog Ella for about 4 years now. The claiming process is extremely easy online and we usually receive our rebate within a day or so. Most recently we attended Sash Veterinary Hospital and they were able to process our claim for us so we only had to pay the gap payment. I would highly recommend Pet Insurance Australia. The early Staffordshire Terriers were bred to be quick, agile fighters with powerful jaws. They fought in dog pits and were used in bull-baiting. This is how the early American Staffordshire Terrier took its other name: The Pit Bull.
Given their fearlessness and commitment to finishing the fight, these dogs developed something of a reputation. However, it’s important to note that American Staffordshire Terriers were also bred to be extremely loyal and relatively docile toward humans.
With proper socialisation, strong obedience training, and insurance, American Staffordshire Terriers make lovely additions to the household.
The animal’s jaws were selected for a powerful grip, which comes at the expense of a shallower nose. As a result, AmStaff’s have some trouble regulating their body temperature (through panting) and are best-suited to indoor living.
Our dog insurance plans offer coverage for up to 90%* of eligible vet bills, a 21-day cooling-off period, friendly customer service, and the added perk of 2 months free on any new pet insurance plans.
A well-bred American Staffordshire Terrier is an impressive specimen: muscular, agile, graceful and keenly aware of its surroundings. It’s a stocky breed with well-defined musculature and a sleek coat that’s easy to care for.
In the course of choosing the best pet insurance for American Staffordshire Terriers and seeing to other considerations, it’s important to take the psychology of the breed into account. Despite public misconceptions, this is not an aggressive dog. Instead, it lives quite peaceably within its own boundaries and with those it considers part of the family.
But the bull-baiting temperament can be aroused when it feels threatened or even like it’s being challenged. With that in mind, it’s essential that the owner have a keen eye and is able to coax the dog into a calm and comfortable state if needed. In the right hands, an American Staffordshire Terrier is a lovely dog that could hardly conceive of doing harm to another.
