Sweet as sugar and twice as sparkly, the Maltese is a pocket-sized powerhouse of love, loyalty, and fluff. Known for their flowing white coats and ‘I rule this house’ attitude, these little charmers are full of personality. But even the tiniest dogs can come with big vet bills, and that’s where pet insurance for Maltese dogs comes in handy, helping you towards the costs of care for your mini monarch with less fuss.

Nikki LevinTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Absolutely incredible service to the absolute highest standard. Pay back is immediate, gap cover is accepted, and in general the nicest most caring humans. I could not support my precious dog without their support. Could not recommend highly enough. Jen WebsterTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My normally very healthy, happy 16th month old chihuahua suddenly became very ill and had to be rushed to the animal hospital. After lots of tests and an overnight stay plus a week of strong antibiotics, she is now back to her normal lovely self. PIA accepted all the claims and processed the payments whilst I was still at the hospital. I could not be happier with the service I received from PIA. Simone RichardsonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Only need to pay the gap, prompt claims and high proportion of costs covered- wouldn’t be without - so grateful for PIA for our golden retriever- wouldn’t be without - highly recommend! Brad DeasTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We have been insured with Pet Insurance Australia for our dog Ella for about 4 years now. The claiming process is extremely easy online and we usually receive our rebate within a day or so. Most recently we attended Sash Veterinary Hospital and they were able to process our claim for us so we only had to pay the gap payment. I would highly recommend Pet Insurance Australia. Personal GmailTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. PIA have become one of the best in their field. I highly recommend them, in fact many of my friends have signed up after my recommendation. Richard Taylor (artywah)Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The Maltese dog has been around for centuries, and it’s never stopped turning heads. With roots tracing back to ancient Mediterranean societies, these tiny dogs were once favoured by royalty, nobility, and anyone who loved a good lap warmer.
They weren’t just for show either. Maltese dogs were known for their alertness and loyalty, even if they were dressed in ribbons half the time! Today, they’re just at home snuggled on a couch as they once were in a marble courtyard. Small, sweet, and full of sass—not much has changed.
Our dog insurance plans offer coverage for up to 90%* of eligible vet bills, a 21-day cooling-off period, friendly customer service, and the added perk of 2 months free on any new pet insurance plans.
If ‘tiny boss with a big heart’ was a breed, it’d be the Maltese. These little fluffballs love being the centre of attention and aren’t shy about letting you know it. They’re affectionate and playful and tend to follow their favourite person from room to room like it’s their job.
They’re a great fit for smaller homes and apartments, especially if you’re around to keep them company. Just be ready for some chatter! They’re known to bark when something’s up (or when it’s not). That beautiful coat needs daily brushing, especially if you keep it long. Tear stains and tangles are part of the deal, so regular cleaning and coat care are necessary, whether you go for full glam or a tidy cut.
Since they’re prone to a few health quirks, having insurance for your Maltese is one option to help keep on top of unexpected vet bills.

This hormonal condition causes the body to produce too much cortisol, leading to symptoms like a pot-bellied appearance, hair thinning, and increased thirst or hunger. It’s treated with lifelong medication and regular vet testing.
Patellar Luxation is common in small breeds. This condition affects their kneecap, causing it to slip out of place. It can cause limping or skipping, and surgery may be needed in severe cases.
This neurological condition, known as ‘water on the brain’, is rare but serious. It can cause head swelling, behavioural changes, or coordination issues. Diagnosis and treatment can be complex.
That honking cough? It might be more than just excitement. A collapsing trachea can make breathing difficult and may need ongoing management with medication or even surgery in severe cases.
MVD is a heart condition where one of the valves wears down over time, leading to heart murmurs or more serious cardiac issues. Regular vet checkups and medication are required.
Your gorgeous Maltese may be tiny, but their health needs aren’t. With a big heart and a whole lot of love to give, these dogs deserve to be protected from life’s little (and not so little) surprises.
